An Interview with Philip Sablerolles: Why He Considers End-to-End Testing the Supreme Discipline in SAP S/4HANA Testing
How Can Energy Companies Achieve a Successful SAP S/4HANA Transformation?
For many energy suppliers and municipal utilities, SAP S/4HANA transformation is among the biggest digital transformation challenges. Increasing regulatory requirements, complex system landscapes, and growing data volumes are increasing the pressure to standardize processes and integrate them efficiently.
The decisive factor for success lies not only in the technology itself, but above all in the quality of the end-to-end processes and their validation through targeted testing.
We at C4 Energy spoke with our Senior Project and Test Manager Philip Sablerolles to shed light on why end-to-end testing plays a central role in SAP S/4HANA projects and what really matters in practice.

Why End-to-End Testing Is Critical in SAP S/4HANA Projects
Testing is a common topic in many projects. What has proven to be particularly crucial?
End-to-End testing is clearly the premier discipline in testing today, especially in complex SAP S/4HANA transformations and SAP migrations.
In doing so, we test not only individual systems but complete business processes across all involved systems. This includes authorizations, production-like and anonymized test data and interfaces.
The goal is to fully simulate real business transactions to ensure that the processes function stably and consistently after go-live.
What do you consider to be your most important role as a test manager?
The most important step is understanding the change. I always ask myself:
How will employees’ daily work change?
After all, the success of a transformation project depends not only on the technology, but also on how well people can work with the new processes.
Challenges in SAP S/4HANA Migrations
In your opinion, what are the biggest challenges there?
The biggest challenges often lie not solely in the technology, but primarily in the collaboration between business units, IT, and the project organization.
In End-to-End processes, different teams come together that have historically operated in separate organizational and process silos.
Especially during an SAP S/4HANA implementation or SAP migration, processes suddenly need to be standardized and harmonized. That means change, and change isn’t always easy.
How do you handle this?
Above all, this requires communication and understanding.
As a test manager, I also see myself as a mediator between business units, IT, and project teams. It is crucial to clearly communicate the value of an SAP S/4HANA transformation and to actively involve employees.
A transformation project can only be successful in the long term if everyone involved understands the goal.
Key Takeaways: Successful SAP S/4HANA projects require End-to-End testing
The transition to SAP S/4HANA is much more than a technical upgrade, it is a comprehensive transformation of processes, systems, and organizations.
End-to-End testing plays a central role in minimizing risks, stabilizing processes, and ensuring long-term business continuity. Successful transformation occurs where technology, processes, and people work together.
